Stewart Renews Effort to Expel Opposition
The president of the Chicago Teacher Union, in an attempt to correct legal problems in her first attempt
to rid herself of vice president Ted Dallas, has begun a new trial process. A meeting of the Executive
Board for the consideration of a new trial has been scheduled for Monday, June 30th, at 3:30 p.m. at the
CTU Merchandise Mart offices.
Dallas has been openly criticizing Stewart for what he perceives as her mismanagement of union funds
and incompetence.
On June 9th Judge Dorothy Kinnaird put a one month halt to the first attempt at a trial to
expel Dallas from the union, stating that there were many procedural errors, unfairness,
and lack of the due process rights of Dallas. She further stated that there were no provisions
in the CTU Constitution and By-laws to remove an officer. Both sides are to report back to court
for an update hearing on July 7th. Stewart's attorneys apparently think that if the the procedural
errors are corrected the judge will allow the trial to proceed.
The expulsion article in the CTU Constitution was written specifically to remove strike breakers
who did not pay levied fines or for those who commit serious crimes. The charges against Dallas
are frivolous and this trial could set a dangerous precedent for any future undemocratic removal
of an officer or members who are critical of any administration. The correct procedure would be
through an amendment to the CTU Constitution by a democratic vote of the membership to establish
a recall provision of an officer.
Several Caucuses of the CTU plan to picket the union offices at the Merchandise Mart during
the Executive Board meeting. For further information contact ptucson2001@yahoo.com
